Schnauzer- Use as point of reference- side corner of eye, top brow bone, tip of nose.
The top of the head is shaved with a #10 blade, carefully scissoring around the edge of the ears with small scissors. Pinch the edge of the ear as you make your way around giving yourself a barrier so you do not cut the ear. DO NOT RUN YOUR BLADE PARALLEL TO THE EDGE OF THE EAR! You can easily get the ear caught in the blade this way. Holding your clippers so the tip of the blade faces you, you will do a reverse shave starting from the inside flap of the ear to the side corner of the eye. This goes against the grain of the hair, defining the beard as well as cutting these thicker hairs shorter. There should also be a whisker mole on the side of the cheek which can also be used as a point of reference. Stop reverse shaving here. Scoop hair in front of eyes using a #10 scooping away from the eye to remove excess hair. Use thinning shears to blend hair on top of nose delicately. Also use thinning shears inbetween the eyebrows in order to separate them. To trim the beard angle your scissors downward, line the finger holes up with one side of the ear creating a 45 degree angle downward so when you cut, the beard will be longer towards the nose. To trim the eyebrows line the tip of your scissors up with the opposite side tip of the nose. The end closer to your fingers should be lined up to the corner of the eye as close as possible to the body.
Westie, cairn, yorkie- the head is similar to a teddy bear head (see non-sporting) but you will be tipping the ears. In this case you shave 1/3 of the tip of ear, then scissor a clean edge on this shaved part.
